Pathway Training Details

London Pulse Netball are committed to the identification and development of talented netball players. Athletes have the opportunity to progress through the London Pulse Performance Pathway. London Pulse are the current U19 NPL champions and we aim to retain our title in the 2019 season. The London Pulse Performance Pathway currently has four High Performance Hubs (located in the East, South, and South-West of London, and Kent), one High Performance Academy, U19 Long Squad, and U21 Squad (see diagram below). The High Performance Hubs are the first stage of the London Pulse Pathway. Players will have regular competition in a Hub League format and will attend weekly training sessions, and camp days. All athletes are eligible for selection for the U17 NPL Tournament teams with internal trials held in the Spring. The U19’s long squad train twice a week, with the final squad selected to compete in Netball Performance League (NPL). London Pulse are delighted to have an U21 team in the NPL for the first time this season. The U21’s train twice a week and will compete in the NPL.

  SELECTION POLICY This selection policy sets out how netball athletes are selected by London Pulse (LP) into the London Pulse Performance Academy U17/U19/U21 annual program, and NSL, NPL U19 & U21/NPFL U17 Competition squads. This Selection Policy applies to Athletes being selected by London Pulse to the following. The U17, U19, U21 and NSL in any London Pulse Competition Squad will be drawn from the London Pulse Performance Program, and (as applicable) by invitation from the relevant Identified Head coaches.   LP Programme Objectives 2018/19

  • To provide the best athletes in the London and South-East Region with a training environment that prepares them for success in national competition.
  • Athletes to have a clear understanding of London Pulse & England Netball principles of attack and defence (WITTW) and use associated language with clarity.
  • Increasing knowledge and understanding of their roles and responsibilities positionally and as a performance athlete.
  • Players to make educational decisions with netball at the forefront.
  • To give players exposure to the different playing styles.
  • To ensure players are physically robust to take the increased training demands.
  • To place top 2 in the NPL U21/U19/U17 League & Tournament in July 2019.
  • To perform consistently throughout the tournament – consistently hit targets identified prior to the tournament.
  • Opportunity to identify future U17/U19/U21/NSL Athletes.

  Athlete selection criteria:   LP Academy U17/U19/U21 – Annual Program. Athletes must meet all of the eligibility criteria for LP Age- group. Be available for selection for the following: LP Performance Academy Weekly programme. Court & S&C Commitments for the annual program.   LP NPL U21/U19/U17 – Competition Squad selection. Athletes must meet all of the eligibility criteria for competition Age- group outlined by England Netball. Be available for selection for the following: LP Performance Academy Weekly programme. Court/S&C and competition commitments.   LP Senior NSL Program Athletes must meet all of the eligibility criteria for competition outlined by England Netball. Meet all performance criteria as set by LONDON PULSE- Head Coach and Selection Panel     Core playing competencies:  

  1. Sound skill base and consistency for performance on court.
  2. Display tactical understanding and establish consistency in making appropriate decisions.
  3. Shows ability to use flair and innovation in their game.
  4. Can sustain intensity in performance throughout game.
  5. Show the potential skills and capabilities to represent LP at the highest level.

  Core personal competencies:

  1. Leadership – leads by example and is role model for others.
  2. Resilience – Mental toughness

  The selectors  

  1. Franchise head coach, Franchise pathway coach, program head coach.
  2. There will be 2/3 independent selectors nominated by Franchise head coach.
  3. Selection Panel members will be appointed by LP Director of netball.
  4. All Selection Panel members, through the Chair of Selectors, are accountable to LP’s Director of Netball and ultimately London Pulse’s Board for ensuring that this Selection Policy and all associated procedures are applied in a fair and appropriate manner.

  • Franchise head coach (one vote)
  • Designated member of the LP Coaching team appointed by CEO. (one vote)
  • Chair of selector or delegate drawn from panel of Selectors within the region. (one vote)

  LP Academy Annual programme

  • Franchise pathway head coach (one vote)
  • Franchise head coach (one vote)
  • Designated member of the LP Coaching team appointed by CEO. (one vote)

  LP Competition Age groups

  • Identified head coach (one vote)
  • Programme head coach (one vote)
  • Designated member of the LP Coaching team appointed by CEO. (one vote)

  Selection Process:  

  1. The selection policy employs an open, transparent and equitable process that gives all athletes a fair chance to challenge for selection.
  2. Selection will be based on merit and the need to achieve the objectives set out by LP.
  3. No athlete has the right or expectation to on-going selection for LP NSL/U21/U19/U17 Programmes or Competition squads.
  4. Open LP Performance Academy Annual program trials for U15s June, and U17s in September.
  5. LP Competition selection from the LP Performance Academy, and invited athletes by nominated head coaches nominated by Franchise head coach.
  6. Athletes can be removed/added into the LP Performance Academy based on commitment, performance – technical/tactical, fitness & attitude.
  7. Athletes may be scouted at club/county/school level – Athletes will be invited in to trial within the relevant age-group training session, and if selected, offered a place within the academy through selector vote. If not selected, the athlete will receive feedback from their trial.

  Appeals   Appeals can only be submitted by a non – selected (or de – selected) Athlete on the grounds that:

  1. The selection process outlined in the Selection Process section above has not been adhered to; or
  2. The selection (or de – selection) process adopted for that Athlete failed to take into account relevant information which was available at the time, which the relevant Selection panel under the Membership of Selection Panels section did not consider.
  3. An Athlete may request an appeal on either of the grounds listed in this section above by submitting a written request to the London Pulse Director of netball. Any appeal shall be made within five working days of the announcement of the LP Annual Program Squads, LP Competition Squads.
