London Pulse vs Loughborough Lightning Friendly

London Pulse took on Loughborough Lightning in a pre-season friendly to start the off their 2020 season on Sunday 12 January.

Split into four 12-minute quarters the game started with Keable and Adio creating a tough defensive wall, keeping the Lightning attack out of the D and resulting in some skilful turnovers. With rapid changes of direction, Semple and Tchine could work their magic around the strong Lightning defenders, allowing them to strategically place the ball in the net. Pulse took the lead at the end of the first quarter. End of first quarter, 14 – 13 to London Pulse.

Pulse looked strong and determined in the second quarter. Great set plays in the midcourt were executed from Drayne and Fadoju maintaining the pressure on Loughborough Lightning. However, the opposition stepped up their intensity and started to edge ahead. Lightning took the lead. London Pulse 22 – 25 Loughborough Lightning.

With the new combination of Lloyd and Thomas on the court after half-time disrupted the Lightning play. Powerful defending from Pulse with quick reactions from Dekker at centre alongside the controlled shooting from Rothwell maintained solid play against Loughborough Lightning. However, Lightning had put their foot on the gas and increased their lead to 27-39 at the end of the third quarter.

Pulse headed back out on the court for the final quarter. Increasing our intensity and focusing on the game plan to fight back to reduce the gap of Lightning’s lead. The combination of Tchine and Thompson enabled London Pulse to win the last quarter but it was not enough to take the lead. The final score being:

 “It was great to see the team back in action with everybody getting time on the court. A great performance against a tough team. Brilliant opportunity to test out some new combinations on the court such as Thomas and Lloyd, which worked well.”

“We showed we can win the ball and play through to goal. Overall, a great first pre-season game against a strong side. Won 2 out of 4 quarters, so a great effort from the team.”

After an exciting beginning to the pre-season, we are now looking forward to the next home friendly pre-season match against Knights on the 2nd of February. This match will take place at the Guildford spectrum and it will be another exciting opportunity to cement our combinations and prepare for the upcoming season.
